Joaquin Miller Park, Oakland Trail Work Project this Weekend Needs More Mountain Bikers

This weekend outdoors enthusiasts with V-O-Cal, Friends of Sausal Creek, REI and (representing mountain biking) the Bicycles Trails Council of the East Bay, will be undertaking a major reroute & addition to the Bishops Walk trail at Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland. For locals who pedal from their doorstep to the trail, it is both the entry and exit point for the park.

As it is the trail runs down an old road bed before taking a hard turn off and down towards the highway. Over time braking has eroded and channelized the trail. The rut that has formed is like a scar running down the hillside. This trail project addresses this issue and more.

The V-O-Cal crew leader has been very receptive to incorporating contemporary trail design concepts. The trail will be lengthened and, even better, we have the opportunity to layout the trail with flow; so valued by our cycling community.  If executed well this section of trail will become much loved by all who use it, be it on bike or sneaker.

The problem? At the moment, the mountain bike community does appear to have taken interest in their local trails. At the time this was posted, only 23 confirmed mountain bikers have registered for the trail work. This doesn’t look good to the land managers and hurts our potential bargaining power in getting new areas in East Bay Parks to become open. On behalf of the 23 riders signed up, mountain bikers of the east bay- you all kind of suck.

Via Instagram- logs laid out in order to visualize the new trail alignment with much thought taken in regards to the flow of the trail.

If I’ve sufficiently shamed anyone into wanting to come out and make a difference, RSVP on the BTCEB’s Meetup page here.   Please note that you’ll also need to sign up via the V-O-Cal website as well. If you’re a mountain biker in the Bay Area interested in helping out with future trail projects, you can learn more on the BTCEB site.
